A grain refinement mechanism of cast commercial purity aluminium by vanadium

Grain refinement of cast commercial purity aluminium by vanadium and the underlying mechanism have been investigated. Addition 0.3 wt% 0.4 leads to columnar equiaxed transition average grain sizes are refined around 196 ?m 154 ?m, respectively. Pro-peritectic equilibrium Al10V particles identified near centres. These either octahedron or plate morphology with bound planes belonging {111} crystallographic planes. Three orientation relationships also determined between grains. Crystallographic analysis based on experimental indicates that relatively high nucleation potency for solid aluminium. Calculation free growth undercooling size distribution reveals large facilitates initiation grains these particles. Moreover, it is found level added provides sufficient restriction effect in melt as quantified its factor. All three factors, i.e., particles, adequate solute work concert achieve observed Al-V alloys.
